This year, 2008, is said to be the 1,000th anniversary 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari, or Tale of Genji) was written.
紫式部 (Murasaki Shikibu) wrote it in Heian Period.
(Heian Period is around 794-1192.)
A lot of versions of interpretation were published until now.
There are not only other-language books but also mordern Japanese translations, because the original books were written in archaic Japanese.
It's one of the Japanese classics.
I found an English version on the UNESCO website.
And an anime adaptation will start next month in Japan.
